Today was pension day for the volunteers so nothing was happening in Belfast with Hands at Work. We therefore decided to go and do our souls some good by visiting Lula the creche at Masoyi.
Masoyi Hands at Work arew very well resourced with many volunteers and well established programmes running, including two creches at K2 and Lula. We arrived early (for us) at 8am. Beauty had been at the creche since 5.35am. Beauty was already well organised with a huge pan of rice on the go, as well as a kettle (perpetually ready to make a cup of tea), and a pot of "porridge" (ground maize).
This was fed to the children shortly after we arrived. I got stuck in with Beauty in the kitchen while everyone else played with the children. She had already been boiling some beetroot, so that had to be peeled and grated, and then mixed with green pepper, onion a big cup of sugar, some salt and vinegar... beetroot salad?
Then Fliss, myself and an American girl (Christie, who was here with her husband doing voluntary work) peeled, deseeded and chopped about 10 kg of butternut squash. Beauty does this every weekday!
She was so pleased that we came to help her as she was on her own today as her helpers were also getting their pensions!
After staying at Lula for a couple of hours we went back to God's Window again, this time it wasn't pooring with rain so we were ab;le to see the fantastic view. Five of us also had a go on the Big Swing at Graskop. A free fall of 70 metres connected to a long rope suspended from the middle of a canyon! An exercise in trust?
