Last night, Carmen and I watched Jamie Oliver saves our bacon. Thought provoking stuff! Years ago, we used to have a thriving food industry. We actually produced food! What went wrong?
I suppose we could blame supermarkets... they're taking over the world. There's nothing you can't buy in a supermarket now. But are the supermarkets to blame or are we for responding to what they offer?
The pressure is on food producers to produce more at a lower price, and we think that because we're getting food cheaper that it's better for everyone! It's not better for the producers and as a nation we seem to be getting more and more unhealthy. If there's one thing you really notice when you sell food, it's that people have so many allergies and intolerances now. I can't remember it being like that 20 years ago.
That's one reason why Carmen and I are trying to source local produce, organic produce, tasty produce and food made by people who care about what they are producing!
